Cachar ready for polls; district has highest women polling stations in the state

Silchar, Udharbond, Sonai, Katigorah, Borkhola, Dholai, Lakhipur, seven legislative assembly constituencies under Cachar district will go for polls tomorrow as will the constituencies in the other two districts of Barak Valley. The second phase of polling will begin at 7:00 am tomorrow in Cachar and will continue till 6:00 pm

Today, deputy commissioner of Cachar Keerthi Jalli informed that there are 1,835 polling stations in the district. More than 13,000 officials have been deployed at these stations for 12,78,881 voters to cast their vote and participate in the festival of democracy. Of them, 6,47,868 are male voters, 6,30,999 are female and 14 are transgender voters.

24 zonal officers, 136 sector officers will look after the proceedings. 111 polling stations have been recognised as critically sensitive. Cachar DC informed that the webcasting facility is available at 980 polling stations. “We are well-prepared to conduct a free and fair election. There are magistrates on the groung and therefore, in case an issue arises, it can be solved immediately,” asserted Jalli.

Cachar district has 201 women polling stations, the highest in any district across the state. “The enthusiasm among the women officials is commendable. They are happy that they have got the opportunity to serve the nation. In fact, fewer women have asked for exemption from election duty compared to the male counterparts,” informed DC Keerthi Jalli.

There are Model Poling stations in each constituency, where handloom and art crafts will be displayed. This has been done to promote the ‘Gaurav Cachar’ theme that the district administration has been following to generate awareness in the district.

She added that social distancing will be maintained at each polling station and ASHA workers will screen voters with thermal scanners.
