Cachar’s new SP MugdhaJyoti Dev Mahanta to take charge today

On January 11, 2019, the Government of Assam announced the appointment of MugdhaJyoti Dev Mahanta as the superintendent of Police – Cachar. Today, Mahanta will take charge ceremoniously at an event in the evening. Additional Superintendent of Police Rakesh Reddy will hand over the charges to the incoming superintendent.

Mahanta will move to Cachar from Tinsukia where he was serving as the SP. He started his service in Assam in 1995 and Cachar happens to be his fifth district of employment as the superintendent of Police. While it is his first time in Cachar, in the past, he worked in Barak Valley as commandant in Karimganj. In 2008 he was in the operation department in Guwahati.

Mahanta believes it is his responsibility to ensure safety and security to each and every resident of the district and their properties. He assured that Police will work 24X7 and take care of the law and order. In the recent past, the residents as well as senior politicians, lawmakers accused the Police department of corruption. MLA and former deputy speaker of Assam Dilip Paul in a public statement called former SP Rakesh Roushan “Gangster” and alleged that he gets benefited from syndicates operating freely “under his nose” in Cachar.

Not only BJP, but Congress’ Rajdeep Goala had also voiced his concerns and alleged the SP of having “connections” with Drug peddlers and other illegal syndicates. Such allegations from high profile individuals raised concerned among the residents of Cachar. On his part, the incoming SP refused to comment on the matterand said, “People’s safety is my and Police’s responsibility.”
