Campaign Ends In Cachar, Silent Period Enforced Ahead Of Polls

Election campaigning for the upcoming Legislative Assembly elections in Cachar officially ended at 5 PM on Tuesday (April 7), marking the beginning of the mandatory 48-hour Silent Period.

As per a directive issued by the Office of the District Election Officer and District Commissioner, the Silent Period has been enforced under Section 126 of the Representation of the People Act, 1951. The restrictions apply to all seven Assembly constituencies in the district — Lakhipur, Udharbond, Katigorah, Borkhola, Silchar, Sonai and Dholai (SC).

During this period, all forms of campaigning are strictly prohibited, including public meetings, rallies, and the dissemination of election-related content through print, electronic or social media. Activities such as soliciting votes via SMS, phone calls or online platforms, as well as any attempt to influence voters, have also been banned. Individuals from outside the respective constituencies were directed to leave the area before 5 PM on Tuesday.

The administration has also laid down guidelines for polling day. Each candidate, election agent or party worker will be allowed to use only one vehicle, with a valid permission letter displayed on the windshield. The use of vehicles for transporting voters has been strictly prohibited.

Further, within a 100-metre radius of polling stations, the use of posters, banners, loudspeakers or any form of disorderly conduct will not be permitted.

The district administration has urged all candidates and political parties to adhere strictly to the guidelines, warning that any violation will invite stringent legal action. The order, signed by the Additional District Commissioner and the Officer-in-Charge of the Model Code of Conduct, also appealed to party workers and supporters to maintain discipline during the Silent Period.
