Central Level Strike to be from 11 am to 3 pm, Cachar to follow a twelve hour strike

Farmers’ organisations on Tuesday have called for an all India strike to repeal the Centre’s new agriculture law. Although a 12-hour strike was initially announced, the strike has been shortened at the central level for ease of common man. In other parts of the country, the strike will be observed from 11 am to 3 pm. However, in Cachar district, the strike will go on from 5 am to 5 pm, the local supporters are not able to accept the sudden change of the decision at the central level.

The decision to limit the strike at the central level was taken on Monday evening. It has been said that the decision was changed so that the common people do not face any difficulty. However, supporters of the strike in Cachar district said they could not change the decision suddenly as all preparations have been made. So the strike in the district will start at 5 am and will continue till 5 pm.

Twelve workers’ and farmers’ organisations in Cachar took to the streets on Monday to make the strike effective in Cachar district. On behalf of organisations like INTUC, AIUTUC, AICCTU, AITUC, Assam Mazuri Sramik Union, TUCC, AIKS, TUCC (Cachar), NTUI, EWTCC, Forum for Social Harmony, AIKKMS, etc. a press conference was held urging markets, offices, courts, vehicles, schools and colleges to be closed tomorrow.

Besides, the organisations marched in a huge procession from the Khudiram idol in Silchar to Rangirkhari point. It was attended by members of organisations supporting the strike. They said everything would remain closed except for essential services.

Soldairty for the farmers’ revolt is pouring in from different parts of the country. This large scale protest by farmers of India has even grabbed the attention of international media and political leaders from around the world. The anti-BJP political parties, as well as celebrities in various fields, from the film world to sports, have demanded the repeal of the agricultural law. The Central Government is going to hold a meeting with the farmers’ organisations again on December 9. The Center has proposed to amend the Agriculture Act. The Union Ministers will discuss the issue with the farmers’ leaders on 9th.
