Clash between Police and Congress Workers in Silchar over protest against delimitation
Today evening, the Silchar District Congress Committee organised a procession in opposition to the delimitation process. However, before the procession could start, a clash broke out between police and Congress workers. The procession was scheduled to begin from the pedestal of the Khudiram statue, but when hundreds of Congress workers arrived, the police attempted to seize their flambeaus. This led to a disagreement between the two parties, and soon the conflict escalated into a roadside altercation.
The police took District Congress President Abhijit Paul and a few other Congress workers into their custody, and they also dispersed the protestors. Some other organisations that were supposed to join the protest were also stopped by the police. The police action has been criticised by the Congress party, which has alleged that the police used excessive force and detained innocent workers without any reason.
The delimitation process in Assam has been a contentious issue, with various political parties and civil society groups opposing it. The process aims to redraw the electoral boundaries of the state, which could lead to significant changes in the number of seats in the Lok Sabha and the Assam Legislative Assembly.
