Communal tension breaks in Silchar's Panchayat Road; "Peace restored, avoid rumour mongering," SP
Silchar’s Panchayat Road area witnessed a communal clash earlier today, resulting in the damage of a couple of vehicles and escalating aggression between individuals from both communities. However, thanks to the prompt intervention of the Cachar Police, the situation was quickly brought under control, preventing further escalation.
Amidst the country’s celebrations of Eid-Al-Adha, with warm wishes pouring in from various quarters, including the Prime Minister of India and the Chief Minister of Assam, the city of Silchar experienced a disruption in its communal harmony as reports of a clash began surfacing on social media. One party claimed that their homes were invaded to investigate alleged slaughtering activities and that their place of worship had been damaged. On the other hand, the opposing party asserted that innocent commuters had been subjected to attacks and religious slurs.
As tensions rose, members from both parties gathered in large numbers, intensifying the situation. Kankan Jyoti Saikia, DIG of the Southern Range, addressed the press to provide an update on the state of affairs. “The situation is now under control. We have identified several sensitive areas and deployed additional forces to establish dominance. While some tensions did arise, peace has been restored. I appeal to the local residents to refrain from taking the law into their own hands,” stated the DIG.
Cachar SP, Numal Mahatta, arrived promptly at the scene and engaged in discussions with representatives from both parties. Through effective communication and without resorting to significant force, he mediated a resolution. “We have had extensive conversations with both parties, explaining the situation to them. Further investigations are underway, and appropriate actions will be taken in accordance with the law,” assured SP Mahatta.
Furthermore, SP Mahatta emphasised, “I urge the general public not to be swayed by rumors and, at the same time, to refrain from spreading baseless information. Peace has been restored, and the Police are diligently investigating the matter. We kindly request everyone to cooperate with law enforcement agencies.”
