Congress Candidate Dhrubojyoti Purkayastha Files Nomination; Predicts Record Numbers in Dholai Victory

Indian National Congress candidate Dhrubojyoti Purkayastha has officially filed his nomination for the upcoming by-election in Dholai, a key constituency in Assam’s Cachar district. His nomination was marked by a strong show of support from party workers and leaders, including Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) President Bhupen Bora and Leader of the Opposition Debabrata Saikia. The by-election in Dholai is scheduled to be held on 13 November, along with elections in four other constituencies.

A large procession of Congress supporters accompanied Purkayastha from the Silchar Congress office to the office of the Deputy Commissioner, where the nomination papers were submitted. The event was a demonstration of Congress’s strength in the region, as hundreds of workers and supporters gathered to rally behind their candidate.

Speaking at the event, Bhupen Bora expressed confidence that Congress would secure a victory in Dholai. He highlighted the dissatisfaction among voters with the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), stating that the people of Dholai had experienced neglect under the leadership of the former MLA, Parimal Suklabaidya. Bora claimed that the BJP government had failed to address key issues like unemployment and flood management in Assam.

Dhrubojyoti Purkayastha, in his statement, expressed 100% confidence in winning the election. He stated that the people of Dholai were looking for change and that his campaign focused on addressing the region’s lack of development. Purkayastha criticised the absence of basic infrastructure, including proper roads, healthcare facilities, and water supply in the area, despite Suklabaidya’s position as a cabinet minister.

The Congress candidate further mentioned that his supporters had created a festive atmosphere during his nomination filing, which he interpreted as a sign of the people’s trust in him. Purkayastha committed to working towards improving the living conditions in Dholai, promising to bring people-centric development to the constituency.

Bhupen Bora, while addressing the crowd, also took a broader stance, criticising the BJP’s “Double Engine” government as a failure. He pointed out that while the BJP promised lakhs of jobs, only a handful had been provided, and that their governance had failed to address critical issues facing the state. Bora urged voters to reject the communal politics of the BJP and support Congress’s vision for development.

Purkayastha echoed these sentiments, adding that his campaign was centred on upholding constitutional values and bringing real change to the region. He noted that his confidence was bolstered by the overwhelming support he had received from the people, which, according to him, gave him the edge over his competitors.

With the election just weeks away, both parties are intensifying their campaigns in an effort to win over the electorate. Congress is focusing on development and governance, while the BJP is expected to campaign on its record at the state and national levels. Meanwhile, BJP had faced some intraparty conflict leading to the resignation of one of their loyal member, Amiya Kanti Das and 500 more from Dholai.

The election day is approaching and the people of Dholai are gearing up to vote the candidate they wish to see as their future MLA. Whether it would be Dhrubojyoti Purkayastha of Indian National Congress or Nihar Ranjan Das of Bharatiya Janata Party is yet to be seen.
