Congress expels MLA Rajdeep Goala and Rumi Nath; "Removing traitors will help," Pradeep Dey

On March 13, 2020, NEDA chief, Himanta Biswa Sarma confirmed to Barak Bulletin that Lakhipur MLA Rajdeep Goala with switch sides and join BJP. However, Congress contested that and said Goala is a Congress loyalist and will stay with the party.

Today, Congress announced that it has decided to expel former Congress MLA from Borkhola Rumi Nath from the party.

“After the 2016 Assembly elections, Rumi Nath had indulged in anti-party activities and in fact, she was not even associated with Congress. The decision has been taken by the Assam Pradesh Congress after due deliberation,” said Pradeep Dey, president of the Cachar Congress Committee.

On the other hand, the All India Congress Committee (AICC) approved the proposal of the Pradesh Congress to expel MLA Lakkhipur Rajdeep Goala.

“We want to make a comeback in the upcoming Assembly elections and to do that it is important to remove the traitors from the party and clean the mess. This is exactly what is going on and therefore, we support the decision taken by the APCC an AICC,” added Cachar Congress Committee president Dey.

Before the 2021 assembly elections, the dual suspension will come in as a challenge for Congress as they will have to field in new candidates.

When it comes to Lakhipur, it is one such constituency that the BJP has never managed to crack. Since 1983, it is the Goala family that has remained undisputed in this constituency. The tea-garden vote base of Congress was under stress and the Panchayat elections prove that. With Goala switching parties, it remains to be seen who the Congress decides to field against him.

Meanwhile, it also remains to be seen if Rajdeep Goala who first became an MLA in 2014 and then retained his seat in 2016 manages to deliver BJP the seat it never won.
