Congress fields candidate in Katlicherra after Sushmita Dev's protest; announces list for 2nd phase
At the stroke of midnight, the All India National Congress released the list of candidates who will contest in the upcoming Assembly Elections in Assam. Congress leads the ‘Grand Alliance’ in Assam which has Congress, AIUDF, Bodoland People’s Front (BPF), CPI, CPM, CPI(ML), RJD, and the Anchalik Gana Morcha. It has been formed to stop the BJP led NDA.
AIUDF is the second-largest party after Congress in the alliance and it had already announced its list of candidates. That list had irked All India Mahila Congress president Sushmita Dev as Congress agreed to AIUDF’s proposal of fielding candidates in Sonai, Katlicherra, and other key seats in Barak Valley.
As it turns out, the Dev’s revolt has yielded some result. Congress has nominated long-term party-worker Sanjeev Roy Katlicherra. Interestingly, Sujam Uddin Laskar is also likely to contest the election from Katlicherra on AIUDF’s ticket. Will one party withdraw the nomination, it remains to be seen.
Meanwhile, Congress did not field a candidate in Sonai where AIUDF has. Former Congress MLA from Sonai Anamul Haque Laskar was in the race to get the Congress ticket.
Here is the list of Congress Candidate from Barak Valley:
