Corona-scare: Cachar district bar association to remain shut for general public

Following a new directive from the Gauhati High Court, the District Bar Association has decided to keep their office closed to the common people keeping the Covid situation in mind. Even during last year, in a similar situation, the District Bar was closed to the public. However, those who have a case scheduled at a date during this time, and if they somehow fail to appear at that time, the court will not issue any warrant against them or give any one-sided verdict against them, said Niladri Roy, President of the District Bar Association.

Niladri Roy said, “Last year, many cases were piled up due to the closure of the District Bar for several months and they’re still pending. This time, the situation is out of control again. The judicial work is a matter of great importance, but even more important is the safeguard of human lives. On April 19, the Gauhati High Court issued an order, after which we held a meeting and decided that common public would be barred from entering the bar library indefinitely starting from Thursday. Those who have a case date scheduled during this time should contact their lawyers outside the bar premises and proceed with the work. However, in this case, if someone fails to present their case to the court in due time, or cannot appear at all, their case will not be dismissed by the court, or there will be no one-sided verdict. We have spoken to the Honorable Judges of the Cachar District and have placed this request. They have promised to keep our request, so there is no need for the general public to panic. ”

He further added: “Only those lawyers who are accredited by the Bar Association will be allowed to come and they will have to fully comply with the COVID protocol at work. All the gates have been closed and only one gate has been kept open and a sanitiser with a temperature measuring device has been kept there. Nobody will be allowed inside the premises without wearing a mask and a safe distance must be maintained to sit inside and is also mandatory to wear a mask while working. If anyone violates it and is caught, we will take action against him/her. That was the decision of the recent meeting and everyone recognized it on humanitarian ground.”
