COVID scare is back among the general public and there is a good reason to be worried as five doctors of Silchar Medical College and Hospital have tested positive for the virus and now recovering.

It is worth mentioning here that Silchar Medical College and Hospital (SMCH), throughout the COVID waves, successfully managed to keep a significant numbers of doctors safe and available to serve the patient. The five doctors testing positive together is, therefore, a worrying sign.

Nodal Officer of SMCH for COVID, award-winning – Riturag Thakuria tested positive and took admission to SMCH’s COVID ward. Dr. Ajit Dey also took admission to SMCH after testing positive.

Dr. Pradipta Roy Chowdhury, Dr. Prabhahita Barua and Dr. Abhijit Swami are in home isolation. Dr. Swami is the superintendent of Silchar Medical College and Hospital.

Principal Of Silchar Medical College and Hospital, Dr. Babul Bezbaruah confirmed that five of them have tested positive and are undergoing treatment.

Vice Principal of Silchar Medical College and Hospital, Dr. Bhaskar Gupta informed that their samples will be sent for genome sequencing.

For the freshers, Omicron is a new variant of the virus and cases of this variant have already been identified in India. At this stage, it is impossible to ascertain if these five doctors or any of these five doctors are infected by the new variant. Omicron can be identified only through genomic sequencing and the samples for the same have been sent.
