Criminal activity in newly opened Borail Eco Camp; 7 arrested for fishing using electric shocks and poison
Cachar Forest Division recently announced the launch of Borail Eco Camp to promote the local ecology and at the same time boost eco-tourism. This park has the potential to attract tourists from all across the northeast and in fact other parts of the country. Tourism activities will be a boon for the local economy and as the DFO Cachar announced, the proceeds will be used to develop the local community.
The Borail Eco Camp is located in Indranagar Village under Udharbond Legislative Assembly Constituency. Within the first week of operation, the Camp management encountered miscreants. Seven individuals entered the eco camp illegally and started fishing in the water body inside the camp. Since the camp is set up to give all ecological experiences, there are options for boating, swimming, and recreational fishing as well. But these seven miscreants used banned practices to catch fish.
The Cachar Forest Division got the information about the illegal activity and got into action immediately. “These seven individuals were using electric shocks and poison to catch fish,” informed DFO, Cachar, Tejas Mariswamy. Many of the caught fishes belong to the schedule category and are protected by wildlife acts.
“Not just that, the poison that they were using to catch the fish is cancerous in nature and can cause breast cancer. Also, the fish caught by using poison if consumed by a kid can cause brain damage. Such is the vulnerability of the heinous act. Moreover, using electric shocks to catch fish is banned and such practices warrant legal action,” asserted the DFO.
