CWG 18: Northeast sensation Mary Kom wins Gold, dedicates it to three sons

“Arise, awake, and stop not till the goal is reached,” a wise man said this long back, but the one following this everyday in real life is Mary Kom. Manipur born Indian pugilist has won a Gold for India in her first Commonwealth Games appearance. In the 48 kg category, she punched out Northern Ireland’s Kristina O’Hara to grab the top slot.
35 year old Mary Kom is a legendary figure in women’s boxing and has won the amateur World Championships in numerous occasions. She also won a bronze medal in 2012 London Olympics and recently bagged a Gold in Asian Championships. Today Mary Kom was a class apart in the ring when she was fighting 22 year old O’Hara. Kom’s domination reflected in the score, the judges unanimously gave a 5-0 verdict in favour of the Indian pugilist.
After her victory Kom who is mother of three sons, dedicated her win to her children. She also acknowledged the efforts of her coaches and members of the association.

Kom was born in Kangthei village, Moirang Lamkhai in Churachandpur district of rural Manipur in eastern India. She came from a poor family. Her parents, Mangte Tonpa Kom and Mangte Akham Kom were tenant farmers who worked in jhum fields.
