Dancing Girl Video Triggers Protests Outside Borail View Hotel in Silchar

Silchar witnessed a heated protest on 2 January outside Borail View Hotel, following an event organised to celebrate New Year’s Eve. A video of a woman dancing at the event went viral on 1 January, drawing criticism from locals who claimed it harmed the town’s cultural values.

The situation escalated as groups, including Bajrang Dal, protested outside the hotel. The protest turned violent, with demonstrators reportedly vandalising property and throwing stones, shattering the hotel’s glass windows. Police and CRPF forces were deployed to control the situation.

Probin Mahato, the magistrate, addressed the public and confirmed that a case has been registered. “Two people, including the programme manager, have been taken into custody,” he said. He urged protesters to cooperate with the authorities and avoid blocking roads, which disrupts public movement.

One protester said, “Silchar town will never accept bringing an outside woman to do a vulgar dance in the name of New Year’s celebration. Our town has its culture and we won’t let it be damaged.” He added that the protesters want the hotel’s owners to be held accountable, not just the managers.

The event, alleged to feature a paid performance by a dancer from outside the region, was criticised for being vulgar and damaging to Silchar’s cultural environment. Locals claimed the act went against the values of the town and demanded strict action.

As of writing this report, the situation outside Borail View Hotel remains tense but under control, with authorities keeping a close watch to prevent further incidents. However, the debate on social media remains divided. While some argue the event was inappropriate, others believe there was nothing illegal as all attendees were adults who paid for the performance.
