
Dead body of drowned Sukumar Das found in the Barak River, SDRF failed to recover body
Four days after 65-year-old Sukumar Das drowned in the Sonai River (a tributary of River Barak), his dead body surfaced on Monday morning downstream of the Barak River in the Nandapur area. Sukumar Das who went to fetch water from the Sonai River from his home in the Dugripar Part I under the Sonai Police Station area slipped into the river stream and drowned. This incident happened on December 15 and even after the SDRF rescue mission, the body was not found by the divers. As per the available information, the lack of clean water in the area forced this old person to fetch water from the river which led to this unfortunate event.
On December 15, Sukumar Das, the 65-year-old man went to fetch water from the Sonai River for domestic chores. All of a sudden, when the pitcher of water slipped off his hand into the water, he jumped into the river to save it. But due to the flow of water and the silt clay deposit underwater, he drowned with the flow of water. When his sister-in-law saw this, she jumped to save him from drowning, but in vain.
Later police were informed, who rushed to the spot with SDRF personnel and a recovery boat. After a long operation by the SDRF, the body could not be found. Four days later, the dead body of the 65-year-old man was spotted in Barak water in the Nandapur area.
As per the eye-witness, he went to save his pitcher which slipped into the river stream. The locals have complained that the old man went to fetch water from the river, due to water scarcity in the area. The local PHE didn’t supply water to the area for the last three months, which forces the people of the area, including the children to fetch water from the river.
