Delayed delivery performed successfully at Silchar Civil; “newborn weighing 5.2 kg is unique,” Dr. Afsar
Most babies arrive between 38th and 42nd week of pregnancy. When babies haven’t arrived by week 42, they’re considered post-term or delayed delivery. During covid times, normal medical procedures have taken a hit as hospitals and nursing homes have got overburdened with covid patients. The risk of contagion also increases at hospitals and that is why non covid patients usually hesitate to visit them unless it’s an emergency.
This time a pregnant patient was presented to Silchar Civil Hospital with labour pain. A Lower Segment Caesarean Section (LSCS) operation was performed urgently by a surgery team led by Dr. Hanif Md. Afsar Alam Laskar and assisted by nurse Roselyn, Manjarul and Anaesthetist Dr. Rajat Deb at Silchar Civil Hospital. The baby was born at 1:45 pm and weighed around 5.2 kg at birth.
A Lower Segment Caesarean Section (LSCS) is the most commonly used type of Caesarean section. A transverse incision is made in the lower uterine segment above the attachment of the urinary bladder to the uterus for delivering the baby. This type of incision results in less blood loss and is easier for the body to heal than other types of Caesarean sections.
While sharing his experience with Barak Bulletin, Dr. Afsar said, “Her delivery date was due on May 29, but she wasn’t admitted at that time due to some unavoidable circumstances. Yesterday she came to hospital with labour pain and we performed a c-section on her. It was a normal standard procedure but we were cautious and watched out for any excess bleeding.”
The doctor said that the patient was advised to go to Silchar Medical College and Treatment where there are better facilities available, but the patient-party insisted Dr. Afsar to continue with the treatment as he has treated the mother before. “Medicines for uterine contractions were also kept at hand incase something inadvertent happened. The baby was heavy going by his weight but there was no complication and both the mother and baby are fine now.”
Dr. Afsar informed that the averting weight of newborns in Assam is around 2.5 kilograms. “I spoke within the fraternity, 5.2 kilograms for a newborn is a unique case,” he stated.
The hospital authorities have requested everyone to reach out to them timely incase of delivery including covid positive pregnant patients.
