DGP GP Singh visits Silchar, Asserts commitment to state's development and security downplaying ULFA's threat to him
The Director General of Police (DGP) of Assam, GP Singh, arrived in Silchar today for a two-day visit to Barak Valley. This marks his first visit to the region since assuming the position of DGP. Upon his arrival, the DGP engaged in a meeting at the SP office with top police officials of Cachar Police to discuss the prevailing law and order situation in the district. During the meeting, he conveyed his satisfaction with the commendable work performed by Cachar SP and other police officers.
Yesterday, ULFA (Independent) issued a threat to the DGP, warning him of dire consequences and demanding that he leave the state if the alleged “fake encounters” continued. In response to these threats, the undeterred DGP addressed the media in Silchar and made bold statements. He revealed that throughout his 15-20 years of service as a Police official, he had received numerous life threats from various militant organisations across India. Citing his commitment to the responsibilities bestowed upon him by the government as a paid employee, the DGP dismissed the significance of such threats and affirmed that he will not allow any organisation to disrupt the developmental progress initiated by the honorable Chief Minister by means of extortion or threats.
Taking a proactive approach towards the situation, DGP GP Singh extended an open invitation to ULFA cadres to come to Assam and contribute to the state’s development. He emphasised that if, even after participating in the state’s progress, they still wished for him to leave, he would gladly comply. Confident in the support of the people of Assam, the DGP stated that he does not require additional security measures as the residents of Assam themselves are his security.
Addressing the ongoing issue of internally displaced persons from Manipur seeking refuge in Cachar due to the ongoing conflict, the DGP asserted that they are guests in Assam. He reassured the public that it is the duty of the police to provide them with security and protection during their stay.
Tomorrow, the DGP is scheduled to visit Karimganj and Hailakandi, where he will participate in similar meetings with local authorities to further strengthen law enforcement and security measures in the region.
