District administration cancels permission to organise mela; Corona scare to jeopardize excitement

In the backdrop of dangerous COVID-19, Cachar Administration has cancelled all the permissions given to individual/groups to organize mela/public meetings etc throughout the district, citing Assam Government’s Social Welfare department order, which advised all the District Commissioners to postpone public meetings in their respective districts.

The letter signed by Addl. District Magistrate, Sumit Sattawan, on 12th March 2020 said, “all kinds of permissions to the different individual/groups to organise mela/public meetings/ mass gathering etc throughout the district of Cachar are hereby cancelled in view of Government instruction received from the secretary to the Government of Assam, Social Welfare department, Dispur…to reduce mass gathering to avoid the spread of COVID-19 Novel Corona Virus diseases”.

On Asking Silchar Municipality Board Chairman Niharendra Narayan Tagore, about the order and whether the Silchar Gandhi Mela will be called off, he said that being out of station, he could not say whether any such order has reached his office or not. “I am on my way back to Silchar and once I reach will enquire about the order.”

Meanwhile, municipality sources have confirmed that the Gandhi Mela will be called off within tomorrow, due to the order issued by district administration.
