District administration cremates 7-year-old on the bank of Dhaleshwari river in Hailakandi

The funeral of seven-year-old Nivas Roy, who died on Monday night at the COVID ICU ward of Silchar Medical College and Hospital, was held on the banks of the Dhaleshwari River at North Niskar in South Hailakandi on Wednesday evening, following the COVID 19 protocol.

The funeral was held under tight security in the presence of Additional Superintendent of Police (SP) Kulendra Nath Deka, OC of Katlichhara Police Station Nirmal Chandra Biswas and other officers of various levels of Police Battalion.

It is to be noted that though he was admitted to Silchar Medical College Hospital with a positive infection, the state-level death audit board of Covid-19 declared his death as non-COVID.

The child from Uttar Niskar village in Katlichhara is the son of late Nihar Roy and Aparna Roy of Uttar Niskar village of Lalapani. For the past five years, Nivas has been living with his mother Aparna Roy in a rented house in Hailakandi. When he fell ill there, his swab was tested and found positive. He was referred from Hailakandi Civil Hospital to Silchar Medical College Hospital where he breathed his last.

An emergency meeting of the State Level Death Audit Board was held in Guwahati. While the team decided to declare it a non-covid death, it asked for the funeral to be done with complete precaution.

The body of Nivas was brought to the village of North Niskar in Katlichhara on Wednesday afternoon under tight security. Wearing PPE kits, the health workers reached northern Niskar village of Katlichhara by road from Silchar by ambulance. Earlier, the Hailakandi district administration, police administration officials and police personnel rushed to the banks of Dhaleshwari river in Uttar Niskar village and arranged for the funeral in accordance with the Covid protocol.
