In a disastrous set of affairs, Silchar Medical College and Hospital (SMCH) turned into a battlefield last evening. A patient was declared dead by the medical team following which the patient’s friends and family members started creating havoc in the hospital premises. A group of junior doctors then assembled and spoke against the developments stating that with thousands of ailing patients in the hospital, this is the last thing one wants.
Madhurband resident, Faizur Miya Laskar (60) was admitted in the cardiology department under specialist doctor Ahmed Hussain Choudhury last Saturday. Laskar’s condition was diagnosed as critical and he was put on ventilation in the Intensive Care Unit of the government hospital. Monday evening, the medical team informed the family members that despite trying their level best they could not save Faizur Miya Laskar. Laskar’s attendants refused to accept the fact that the team worked their level best and started blaming doctor Ahmed Hussain for the loss of life. Following a series of verbal abuse, the attendants started vandalising the Hospital. There are allegations that they even raised their hands on Dr Ahmed Hussain.
On the other hand, a group of junior doctors assembled and countered the attendants. According to eyewitnesses, more and more junior doctors kept joining the group hitting out at the crowd. Scared, the vistors ran away from the hospital premises. The group managed to get hold of one of the attendants and kept him captive in the hospital.
Officer in charge of Ghungoor police outpost Parag Hazarika rushed to SMCH with his team, Silchar Police station’s in charge Indrajeet Chakraborty too joined him. After Police’s arrival situation normalised in the medical college is what we got to know.
The attendants stated that they did not raise hands on any doctor however they held their argument that the doctor and lack of proper treatment are responsible for Faizul Ahmed’s death. They also alleged that the group of junior doctors came and started beating them. The superintendent of SMCH A K Baisya denied any shortcomings from their end.
According to sources, there was a power failure in the ICU and the machines including monitors were switched off for a significant period of time. Sources believe that the infrastructure needs to be blamed for both – death of Faizul Laskar and the aftereffects of it.
Assam Heart Care Society president Nirmal Kanti Bhattacharjee and Pinak Kanti Chakraborty expressed their concerns. The society wants the ones who raised their hands on doctors to be put behind bars.
