"Doctors, nurses, staff in PPE are doing a job that the army does in the border," Sushmita Dev after discharge from SMCH

National president of Mahila Congress and former MP from Silchar, Sushmita Dev has got discharged from Silchar Medical College and Hospital after recovering from COVID 19 infection. She was admitted to the COVID block at SMCH on July 8. Senior officials from SMCH, Superintendent of SMCH, Abhijit Swami, Dr. Siddhartha Bhattacharjee, and Dr.Dhar from microbiology were also present there.

Speaking with Barak Bulletin, Sushmita Dev said, “Staying at SMCH I learned that the doctors, nurses, staff in PPE doing a job that the army does in the border.” She emphasised that the doctors, nurses and other workers including the janitors, ambulance drivers, paramedical staff remain in PPE for 10 hours at a stretch which is a “huge task”. “Yet they were well-behaved and there was no sign of impatience in the way they were carrying themselves. Understand that the PPE kit is airtight and then imagine how difficult and suffocating it could be for them. The job they are doing is commendable and beyond imagination.”

Dev stayed at SMCH for 12 days and she said she interacted with the doctors, nurses, janitors. “One of the nurses at SMCH shared with me that her menstrual cycle is going on and she has no option but to remain unchanged for at least 10 hours. Listening to her, I got goosebumps,” asserted Dev.

She added that this is the time the country must remember the sacrifices and efforts of the medical fraternity and what they mean to society. “The ambulances are on the road throughout and they are transferring patients 24 hours a day. The drivers, attendants on those Ambulances must be appreciated wholeheartedly.

Dev mentioned that the Microbiology department of Silchar Medical College and Hospital, which is responsible for running the tests deserves a lot of appreciation. “They stay centimeters away from the virus and conduct the tests. I would like to mention that Dr. D Dhar and her team are doing a spectacular job.”

Dev will remain under quarantine at a club in Silchar for the next 14 days. “My father’s (Late Santosh Mohan Dev) death anniversary is on August 2. I have been informed that I will be allowed to go home on August 1,” concluded Dev.
