A civil vehicle requisitioned by Karimganj Police was escorting two under-trial prisoners from Silchar Medical College and Hospital to Karimganj Jail. On the way, the Tata Sumo ramped at speed at the rear end of a parked truck in Ramnagar bypass. The locals said that the vehicle was over speeding and upon impact, it lost its shape. The Under Trial Prisoners were escorted to SMCH for treatment as per the order of the court.

The driver identified as Rahul was under the influence of Alcohol and he could not control the speeding car. The accident has left Head Constable Ajit Nath Laskar and Havildar Susen Suklabaidya in critical condition. Both are in Silchar Medical College and Hospital battling for life. Apart from them, Armed Branch Constables, Babul Hussain Laskar, Habib Uddin, Surman Ali, Kalim Uddin, Nazmul Hussain Laskar, and UBC Abdul Kadir were also part of the escort team traveling in the same car.

Superintendent of Police, Karimganj, Partha Pratim Das has contacted his counterparts in Cachar. “We have got all the necessary support from Cachar SP and our team is also on the way reaching the spot. The Under Trail Prisoners have been secured and we will get to know more about the incident once the team submits the report,” said the SP.

The locals who rushed to the spot reported that not just the driver, even the Police officials were under the influence of Alcohol. They said that the officials could not hold themselves straight. It is worth mentioning here that the Chief Minister of Assam, Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma has recently mentioned that around 300 Assam Police Personnel have been identified as habitual drunkards and so, they will be offered VRS paving way for youngsters to replace.

Assam DGP G P Singh, added that these individuals are being identified by their units on the basis of their records. The personnel being identified were described by him as “habitual drunkards, physically unfit and having below average performance”.

“Past records are the prime consideration and the final decision will be taken by a three-member board chaired by the head of that particular unit. After that, the Assam Police headquarters will exercise due diligence,” he was quoted by The Indian Express.

This accident, in all probability will add to the count.
