ECI announces public sitting: To address suggestions and objections on delimitation from Barak Valley districts on Jul 20 in Guwahati
In a significant development, the Election Commission of India (ECI) has declared that it will conduct public sittings in Assam to listen to suggestions and objections regarding its draft proposal on the delimitation of Assembly and Parliamentary constituencies. The ECI had earlier invited feedback through a notification dated June 20, 2023 and approximately 500 suggestions and objections were received by the stipulated deadline of July 11, 2023.
The Commission has diligently undertaken a thorough examination of all the received suggestions and objections, taking into account their relevance and significance. In a move to ensure transparency and inclusivity, the ECI has now decided to hold public sittings, which will provide an opportunity for individuals to present their views and concerns regarding delimitation directly to the Commission.
The public sittings for the districts Dhubri, Goalpara, South Salmara, Bongaigaon, Barpeta, Nalbari, Karimganj, Hailakandi and Cachar are scheduled to commence on July 20, 2023 and will take place from 09:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. The designated venue for the event is Kalakshetra, situated on Panjabari Road.
The ECI’s draft proposal, initially published on June 20, 2023, was disseminated through the Central and State Gazettes as well as vernacular newspapers, ensuring widespread awareness and accessibility to the public.
During the public sittings, individuals who submitted suggestions or objections will have the opportunity to present their arguments and provide further insights to the Election Commission. The Election Commission of India encourages all concerned citizens to actively participate in the public sittings as their valuable inputs will significantly contribute to the finalisation of the delimitation process.
