Electricity charges hike : Cachar District Committee of All Assam Electricity Consumers Association protests
The Cachar District Committee of All Assam Electricity Consumers Association held a protest in Silchar alongwith the entire state and submitted a memorandum to the Chief Minister demanding the withdrawal of decision to increase the electricity charges by fifty paise per unit. Manmath Nath, the district president of the organisation, after giving the memorandum, said that the APDCL authorities have announced an increase of 50 paise per unit of electricity from February on the pretext of increasing natural gas prices. The increase in electricity tariff three or four times in a single year has never happened before. Increasing the tariff three or four times in a year on the pretext of increase in fuel prices is not only unfair and unreasonable but also unprecedented.
Nath said that the public protested strongly when the per unit price was increased by 30 paise in December last year, but again they have increased the price to 20 paise per unit from February without discussing the matter with public. Many state governments of the country are providing free electricity up to 200 units to consumers but in Assam frequent tariff hikes despite the absence of FPPP is the failure of the electricity department which is being put on the common man by collecting increased charges.
The protest organised by the Cachar district committee of All Assam Electricity Consumers Association to demand the immediate withdrawal of the unfair decision to increase the electricity tariff was attended by the President of the organisation Manmath Nath, Vice President Champalal Das, Dilip Nath, Secretary Anjan Kumar Chanda, Executive Committee Member Kanak Paul, Khadeja Begum Laskar, Motilal Das and others.
