Eminent Urologist and Robotic Surgeon, V Mohan Kumar to visit Silchar; Will check patients in Apollo Clinic, Meherpur

Statistics reveal that prostate-related disease is on the rise and causing serious morbidity. Research shows that it starts before 30 years and approximately 8 per cent of men are affected by microscopic benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) by 40 years, 50 per cent by 60 years and 90 per cent by 90 years of age. The prevalence of BPH range from 14 per cent to 30 per cent for men aged 50 or older, depending on the definition used. While BPH prevalence in India is by 25 per cent for 40 – 49; 37 per cent for 50 – 59; 37 per cent for 60 – 69; 50 per cent for 70 – 79. Approximately, two out of every five Indian men have bothersome lower urinary tract symptoms due to BPH. However, many will not consult a doctor, as many will normalise it, linking it with ageing, the weather, travel-related to stress, change in water, etc. They will cope with the bother of the disease until it becomes too severe and causes all sorts of complications.

Doctors worldwide have recommended checkups and uroflowmetry. Ignorance could lead to prostate cancer which is primarily a disease of the elderly with more than three quarter of the cases occurring in men above 65 years of age. This disease has become a major health problem globally during the last few decades. Studies have shown that prostate cancer is the second most frequently diagnosed cancer in men worldwide and the fifth most common cancer overall.
