One of the masterminds running the racket of transporting coal illegally, Abdul Ahad Choudhury, popularly known as Ahad, has been shot dead by Hailakandi Police. Under Lala Police Station, near Lakhinagar Sub Post, the encounter took place.

Abdul Ahad Choudhury is allegedly one of the masterminds who initiated the GST scam in the State, where using illegal means through him, the Coal Mafias could bypass the taxation system. He was one of the wanted criminals. He was involved in several other scams including forging his own death to claim insurance.

“Late night on April 29 (morning April 30), we managed to arrest Ahad. As per protocol, he was escorted to the hospital for a routine medical checkup. But somehow he managed to escape from the hospital. Throughout the day we were hassled as we could not trace him,” informed the Superintendent of Police, Hailakandi, Gaurav Upadhyay.

He added, “Late at night, we got the information that he is trying to escape to Karimganj. We installed check gates in Lakhinagar and the information turned out to be true. He was armed riding on a motorcycle behind someone. When he saw the check gate, he opened fire, we had to retaliate. In the process, he sustained bullet injuries.”

Abdul Ahad Choudhury was rushed to the hospital where the doctors declared him brought dead. Hailakandi SP informed that the Police officials did not sustain any bullet injuries.
