Encounter in Cachar: Two accused dacoits including one wanted criminal shot dead

Big breaking news coming in from the Cachar district police headquarters in Silchar. Three individuals accused as dreaded dacoits were arrested in Jorabat. Last night, the team had left Jorabat and was traveling to Silchar with all three arrested accused.

“On June 30, a case was registered in Silchar Police Station alleging that there was a shootout in Rangirkhari area over a property dispute. When we started investigating, we identified an accused Abul Hussain Barbhuiya (Abu) who is traveling towards Meghalaya. OC Silchar was assigned to investigate the case and he had gone to chase him with his team. However, due to the landslides and traffic, the chase got delayed. Since Abu is a dreaded criminal, we have informed the Jorabat Police Station about the same,” informed Cachar SP, Ramandeep Kaur.

Yesterday, the car was intercepted and along with Abu, and the team of Cachar Police led by OC Silchar Sadar, arrested Anwar Hussain (22) and Kamrul Islam Barbhuiya (Lakoi). “Lakoi is one of the wanted criminals in Barak Valley. He has cases of extorsion, kidnapping, dacoity against him. Two cars of Cachar Police were escorting three of them of Silchar, however, when the cars crossed Sonapur and slowed down at the gate, Lakoi and Abu managed to escape from the car and started running away,” informed SP Kaur.

She added, “Police opened fire at them to stop them from escaping and in the process, both of them incurred bullet injuries. They were rushed to the Kalain PHC where the doctors referred them to Silchar Medical College and Hospital. In SMCH, the doctors declared them brought dead.”

The two deceased therefore are, Kamrul Islam Barbhuiya alias Lakoi and Abul Hussain Barbhuiya alias Abu. 22-year-old Anwar Hussain Barbhuiya remains in the custody of Police.

Correction: The story has been updated. In the initial copy, it was erroneously mentioned that due to traffic jam and landslide in Meghalaya, the OC Silchar had to abandon the chase. As corrected, the OC did not abandon the chase but the chase got delayed and eventually the OC nabbed the accused. Inconvenience regretted.
