Eviction drive in Tarapur; administration demolishes illegal establishments

At the heart of Silchar town, District Administration conducted its eviction drive. A special task force under the leadership of magistrate Deepmoy Thakuria bulldozed all the illegal establishments encroached in government land.

Speaking with Barak Bulletin, a spokesperson of the task force said all the vendors, property owners and other concerned parties were well informed with notices about the eviction. The official said so far, they have not faced any untoward incident or resistance from the people of Silchar, “They too want the eviction drive to continue and so they have been cooperating all throughout,” the official added.

He said that deputy commissioner, Laya Madduri formed a special task force to look after the eviction drive. The task force included members from District Administration, Silchar Municipality Board, PWD, and other concerned departments.

“Everyday we see a traffic jam in Tarapur, while roads are narrow one of the major reason why it happens is because of the illegal encroachment. Half the  Bazar is on the road, there are other small shops so it is important to free the road for the benefit of the locals. We will continue to do the same throughout the town,” the spokesperson added.

Local residents of Tarapur area and the owners/tenant of the demolished properties also spoke with Barak Bulletin. Their point was while the administration is well within its rights to demolish illegal establishment it should explain how it demarcated the zones it is evicting. “While stores are uprooted here in Tarapur there are stall functioning elsewhere in the town. While we support the eviction drive and ensure cooperation we would also like to know why certain areas remain untouched,” said a resident.
