Ex-BJP MLA Aminul Haque Laskar Makes Controversial Remarks During Congress Campaign for Dholai Seat
Former Bharatiya Janata Party MLA from Sonai and current Congress leader, Aminul Haque Laskar, stirred controversy during a campaign rally in Dholai’s Muslim-dominated region by making a bold statement against the BJP. Laskar, while addressing a gathering to garner support for Congress candidate Dhrubajyoti Purkayastha, remarked, “If a Muslim truly has Muslim blood in their veins, they can never support the BJP.”
The remarks have intensified the election atmosphere in Dholai, a known BJP bastion, witnessing a fierce battle in the run-up to the by-elections.
Following the nomination filings, parties including Congress, BJP, and several independent candidates have been actively campaigning to win the seat. Congress leaders have mounted a strong campaign to reclaim Dholai and secure a victory for Purkayastha.
Aminul Haque Laskar, who previously served as the Deputy Speaker of the Assam Legislative Assembly, delivered his speech during a Congress rally, making a pointed appeal to Muslim voters. He alleged that the BJP is an anti-Muslim party, saying, “A true Muslim would never vote for them.” He justified his statement by drawing on his past association with the BJP, saying, “I have lived with the BJP for 12 years; no one knows them better than me.”
Laskar also launched a scathing attack on former Dholai MLA and current Silchar MP Parimal Suklabaidya, bringing up the controversial eviction drive at Dholai’s Rajanikhal. Laskar accused Suklabaidya of demolishing Muslim houses, a graveyard and a mosque during the drive, referring to it as a targeted act against the community.
Expressing confidence in his party’s prospects, Laskar stated that he is certain of Congress candidate Dhrubajyoti Purkayastha’s victory in the by-election.
