'Expelled' from party, Rumi Nath approaches Congress leadership; seeking tickets for Borkhola

A few months ago, the Congress expelled former MLA Rumi Nath and Lakhipur MLA Rajdeep Goala from the party. The expulsion order of Rajdeep Goala was given by the Central Committee but Rumi Nath was expelled by Pradesh Congress alleging anti-party activities. After Rajdeep Goala was incorporated into BJP, state president Ranjit Das made it clear that he would not let Rumi Nath get BJP membership as long as he is the state president. Now she has appealed to Pradesh Congress with the expectation that she would be allowed to contest from Borkhola in the upcoming elections on Congress’s ticket. Rumi Nath handed over her application to Treasurer Brajendra Talukder at the Pradesh Congress office in Guwahati on Tuesday.

Speaking to Barak Bulletin from Guwahati, she said, “My membership was canceled due to a misunderstanding within the party, but now it has been sorted. I have helped the common people of Borkhola in the last five years and they want me as their candidate. I hope the high command of the party understands it. This election is a very difficult battle and we have to fight it together. I have confidently expressed my desire to contest from Borkhola as a Congress candidate. Now it is for the high command to decide.”

Recently, the heavyweight leaders of Pradesh Congress came to Cachar to take part in the “Janahunkar” rally of Congress. In front of them, Papan Dev presented his desire to contest as a candidate from Borkhola. When Rumi was expelled, her supporters seemed to have high hopes for Papun Dev’s ticket. However, this time, the whole equation may change now Rumi also made that request and the whole amount may change. On being asked about it, Rumi Nath said, “Of course, my popularity in Borkhola is more than Papan Dev. But with the popularity, there are also some difficult chapters of my life. i want to leave the past and think about the future where Borkhola will be free of Kishore Nath.”

Speaking about Kishore Nath she said, “In the last five years, the record of 127 MLAs in the state shows that Kishore Nath has committed the most corruption. The people of the area cannot withstand him but are silent for fear of his goons. The common people will give their answer through votes. But to defeat a strong man like him, we need a mature opponent, which is what I am at the moment.”

After moving from one party to another, many leaders say that they would ask for tickets in accordance with the rules of the party or do whatever the high command says, and if necessary, work for another candidate, etc. However, Rumi Nath openly stated that she is the most deserving candidate for the Congress ticket in this election. It is heard that his father Troilokkho Nath is in constant touch with the bigwigs of Congress and will play an active role not only in making her daughter win in Borkhola but also in winning Congress candidates in other centers of the district. Considering this, many people think that Rumi Nath may get Congress membership and party tickets before the next elections.
