Gautam Roy VS Ripun Bora; Congress divided into halves in Hailakandi
Once familiar as the undisputed king of Hailakandi, a former minister in the government of Assam, Congress’ Gautam Roy is currently suspended by the party. This decision taken by Assam Pradesh Congress Committee has irked Roy loyalists and they have started protesting all across the district. Gautam Roy was filmed celebrating after Narendra Modi and BJP’s victory in the recently concluded general elections to the 17th Lok Sabha. Roy distributed sweets and raised Jai Shree Ram slogans. Taking cognizance of Roy’s activities, APCC decided to suspend the Congress veteran for a period of six years.
His supporters today organised a rally and walked to the Congress office in Hailakandi and locked it. They also burned effigies of APCC president Ripun Borah and other senior Congress leaders. In a clear warning directed towards the APCC, the Roy loyalists demanded to withdraw the suspension within seven days or the protest will keep getting bigger.
An hour after the Roy loyalists’ agitation the Ripun Borah supporters or anti-Roy Congress cadets marched to the Congress office in Hailakandi and hammered the lock to open the party office.
Two parties continued their protests and counter-protests making Hailakandi witness a very unique political scenario. It remains to be seen how APCC handles the situation.
