Facebook Page Admin Lands in Soup After Posing as a Journalist, Cachar Police Detains Him

In a startling incident, a fake journalist was detained at the District Commissioner’s office while attempting to gather news during the nomination submissions for the Dhola constituency on Thursday. The individual, identified as Kanta Deb, was spotted wearing a press ID card, which led him to pose as a legitimate reporter.

Local journalists, who were on duty at the time, became suspicious of Deb’s actions and decided to confront him. When BJP members walked out of the office after filing their nomination, his unusual closeness to politically exposed persons drew suspicion which ultimately turned out to be legitimate. Upon questioning, he failed to provide satisfactory answers regarding his credentials and purpose, raising further doubts about his authenticity.

Further investigation revealed that the ID card bore the name of “Dholai Today,” a Facebook page that was created on July 16, 2023. The journalists, concerned about the implications of unauthorized reporting, promptly handed Deb over to the police for further action.

As per sources, Deb was detained on October 24 and kept in police custody for that night. He was released the following morning after the Sadar Police took a statement of undertaking from him. Deb has confessed that the press card was made by him and not provided by any legitimate agency. The menace of Facebook Page creators posing as pressmen to con of common man’s vulnerability is a threat and in some cases, it even escalates to extortion attempts.
