Fake DIPR Recognitions to Facebook Journalism: Cachar E Media Journalists Association Begins Journey with Motto to Address Issues
In a move to tackle the growing influence of unregulated Facebook pages and bloggers operating as “news channels,” journalists in Cachar have formed a new organisation dedicated to representing professionals working in electronic media. The “Cachar E-Media Journalists Association” was officially established during a meeting held on Wednesday at a hotel in Silchar, attended by over 50 journalists from various parts of the district.
The meeting, chaired by senior journalist Abhijit Bhattacharjee, brought together reporters from Silchar, Lakhipur, Udharbond, Sonai, Dholai, and Katigorah to discuss the challenges that professional journalists face in the era of social media-driven news. A major point of concern raised during the discussions was the impact of so-called “Facebook journalists,” who, according to the participants, compromise the credibility of professional journalism, making it difficult for legitimate journalists to maintain their dignity and standards in the industry.
The participants expressed strong opinions about the need to regulate these Facebook-based entities, emphasizing that they are undermining the integrity of the media. “The proliferation of Facebook pages and bloggers posing as journalists is a serious challenge for us. They are diluting the profession and making it difficult for real journalists to practice with respect,” said one representative.
Another significant issue raised was the discrimination faced by professional journalists in obtaining government recognition cards. Attendees voiced frustration over the fact that many individuals who do not practice journalism are able to secure these cards, while legitimate journalists struggle to receive recognition.
In response to these pressing issues, the journalists unanimously agreed on the need for a formal organisation to advocate for their rights and represent their interests. Thus, the Cachar E-Media Journalists Association was formed. Abhijit Bhattacharjee was elected as the President of the association, while Bikram Sarkar was named the General Secretary. Additional General Secretaries include Imad Uddin Mazumder and Ahadul Ahmed, with Arup Nandi serving as Treasurer. The executive committee includes 10 other members, namely Akhi Das, Rajib Hussain, Samin Sen Deka, Abul Kalam, Bikram Das, Naitik Shil, Dilip Singh, and Paplu Das.
Speaking about the formation of the association, Abhijit Bhattacharjee highlighted the growing number of e-media professionals and the challenges they face due to the unregulated nature of online journalism. “Journalists working in electronic media are increasing daily, but with this growth comes the threat of unprofessional practices by Facebook pages and bloggers. Through this association, we will address these concerns and work towards securing our future in the industry,” Bhattacharjee said.
The newly formed association aims to take up various issues with the government and ensure that the interests of legitimate journalists in electronic media are protected in the Barak Valley region.
