Fatal accident near NIT Point; 1 spot-dead, 1 critical
In a fatal road accident, one woman lost her life while one man is admitted to Silchar Medical College and Hospital (SMCH) in critical condition. At around 11:00 AM today morning, a motorcycle heading towards Silchar from Hailakandi was hit by a tipper truck. Following the collision, the woman sitting behind the rider fell off the motorbike on her head. The rider was also forced off the two-wheeler. This incident took place right at the end of the bridge (towards Rangirkhari) next to NIT (National Institute of Technology) point.
The woman who died on the spot is yet to be identified. Meanwhile, fuming locals have blocked the road. “They feel this accident occurred because of the ongoing construction work and carelessness of tipper drivers driving on the road,” says senior official in the traffic department. The protesters did not allow Police to send the dead body to Silchar Medical College. There is a severe traffic jam on each side of NIT because of this road blockade.
The driver of the tipper ran away with the truck after hitting the motorbike, however, Police have managed to nab it, “The driver drove for a while and then parked it in shade close to the spot. We have found the vehicle, but the driver is still missing. We are toeing the vehicle to Silchar Sadar thana for further investigation,” says the senior officer.
As per the latest available information, a huge battalion of security personnel reached the spot and put the body in an Ambulance. However, the protest is still on.
