Feb 22: Weather Department issues yellow warning for Assam, forecasts heavy rainfall, thunderstorms in Cachar
The India Meteorological Department’s Regional Meteorological Centre in Guwahati has issued a warning for heavy rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning, and hail in parts of North Eastern states, including Assam and Meghalaya.
“A trough runs roughly along Long. 87°E to the north of Lat. 22°N between 1.5 km & 2.1 km above mean sea level. Due to southwesterly winds from Bay of Bengal over Northeastern States at lower tropospheric levels, Widespread rainfall accompanied by thunderstorm/lightning/hail/ heavy rainfall at isolated places is very likely over North Eastern States (Arunachal Pradesh & Assam) during 21-22 February 2023,” states the press release issued by the Government of India department.
The warning for Assam and Meghalaya for February 22 reads that there will be light to moderate rainfall at a few places with isolated heavy rainfall. Thunderstorms and lightning with hail may occur in isolated places as well.
Meanwhile, Nagaland-Manipur-Mizoram and Tripura can expect light to moderate rainfall at isolated places with thunderstorms and lightning at isolated places, but not in Manipur and Nagaland.
In the district level update too, the department has issued Yellow Warning for Cachar stating “Thunderstorm with lightning very likely at isolated places,” on Feb 22. Feb 23, it again turns green. It is worth mentioning here that no warning has been issued for Hailakandi or Karimganj, however, for Dima Hasao, Feb 21 was a Yellow warning, but Feb 22 has been converted to green – which means no-warning.
