Female healthcare worker physically harassed in Barak Valley vaccination centre; 4 perpetrators arrested

In a shocking turn of events, a female health worker was harassed by a few miscreants in a vaccination centre in Katlicherra of Hailakandi district yesterday. The incident happened on June 22 when a vaccination drive was going on at the Dholai Molai ME school in Katlicherra. Four people who went there to get themselves inoculated with vaccine got furious with the organizers and started misbehaving with the health workers there. Eventually, things got out of hand and those four miscreants started physically and verbally harassing the female health worker. At the intervention of others, the conflict got halted. The health worker who was harassed later filed an FIR against those 4 perpetrators at the Katlicherra police station after which they were arrested.

After receiving the complaint, OC Tanvir Ahmed along with his team immediately went out to arrest the perpetrators who were identified by the victim herself. The team of police searched for those 4 miscreants all day and based on a secret source, the police were able to nab all the miscreants one by one around evening yesterday. The four miscreants who were arrested are – Suhail Ahmed, Badrul Islam, Kamal Uddin (Kabir) and Saharul Islam. They hail from the Dholai Bilgaon area under the Dholai Molai GP and all of them are aged between 20 and 22.

Hailakandi Superintendent of Police, Ramandeep Kaur, said, “The incident happened at the Dholai Molai ME school vaccination centre in Katlicherra where the inoculation drive was going on. There was some hassle at the centre and suddenly those four miscreants started misbehaving with the health officials working there due to some reason. After a while, things got out of hand and they started harassing the female health worker both verbally and physically. After the FIR was filed against those miscreants, Katlicherra police started searching for them and eventually in the evening they were able to nab all of them based on secret sources. Currently, they’re under Katlicherra police custody and they’ll be produced in court soon so that they can be sent to judicial custody because it’s an assault on a healthcare worker during a pandemic, which is a serious offence.”

According to the Hailakandi SP, the culprits were booked under IPC sections 353, 354, 294 and 427. Apart from those, they were also charged under the Disaster Management Act, 2005 and The Assam Medicare Service Persons and Medicare Service Institutions (Prevention of Violence and Damage To Property) Act, 2011.
