First Bangladeshi immigrant receives Indian citizenship through CAA
A Bangladeshi man has received Indian citizenship through the CAA in Assam, making him the first immigrant to be granted this status. Dulan Kumar Das, a resident of Das Colony in Silchar, who crossed the barbed wire from Bangladesh into Assam, was formally granted Indian citizenship on Monday. With the granting of citizenship, Bangladeshi Dulan Das has been recognized as a “self-respecting Assamese.”
Dulan Das’ advocate, Dharmananda Deb, states that Das entered India in 1988. After the implementation of the CAA, he applied for citizenship through the “CAA 2019” app on April 1.
Yesterday, he was informed via email from the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) that his application had been accepted and approved by the MHA.
Additionally, the MHA has instructed him to collect his citizenship certificate from the Directorate of Census Operations office located in Amingaon, Guwahati. During the citizenship application process, Dulan Das from Silchar submitted land documents from Bangladesh dated 1986, according to advocate Dharmananda Deb. Advocate Dharmananda Deb mentioned that the individual from Silchar is the first in the Northeast to receive citizenship through the CAA.
