First edition of Passport Mela in Cachar starts with over 1600 applicants, “Will improve police-public relation” says SP

To improve the Police-Public relations in the district, the Cachar Police have organised the first-ever Passport Mela in Silchar. In the mela that is being held at the premise of the Superintendent of Police’s office, the district police have facilitated the service of passport police verification among other services. 1700 applicants have been invited to avail the service which includes women, children and senior citizens as well from across the district. The Passport Mela was formally inaugurated by Cachar MP Dr Rajdeep Roy, MLA Dipayan Chakraborty and Kaushik Rai, in the presence of the Deputy Commissioner and Superintendent of Police of the district. 

Police verification is a very important step when it comes to getting a passport and this step sometimes becomes complicated many faces a hard time producing proper documents and proving their citizenship. This leads to a pending application for the passport with the police. To reduce the load of pending applications, the Cachar Police has held this mela at the premise of the SP Office. People have started coming to the mela from 10 AM and Cachar Police has made all arrangements to serve these people today. The police has set-up eight tables to increase the speed of the service in this one-day service.

Cachar SP APS Numal Mahatta regarding this initiative said, “We have organised this passport mela to improve and increase our service to the public. We have seen that many gets stuck with police verification for getting a passport. We have invited all the applicants whose passport applications are pending and we have got a very good response. There are children, women and elders and we have made arrangements for water and food for them”.

Regarding the verification process, the SP further said, “We are doing a primary check of the documents of those applicants whose applications are pending and checking for mistakes. We are trying to ensure that there is no scope for mistakes and at the same time, we also want to dispose of all the pending police verification applications on our behalf”. To increase police public relation, the SP has also said that there is provision for an affidavit in the mela for anyone who needs to get their documents verified. This mela started at 10 in the morning in the presence of the elected representatives of the district along with people from the district administration and police.
