
Former Minister, Architect of IMDT Act 83 Abdul Muhib Mazumder Departs at 89
Abdul Muhib Mazumder, former Assam cabinet minister, an advocate of Guwahati High Court, and the architect of the contested Illegal Migrants (Detention by Tribunal) Act, breathed his last at the age of 89 on Wednesday morning at Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH). He was undergoing treatment for old-age sicknesses. His last rites will be performed today at his Hatigaon residence.
Abdul Muhib Mazumder hails from Hailakandi district and represented Hailakandi in state legislative assembly four times. He had become Cabinet Minister twice, first in 1983 Indian National Congress’s ministry and then in 1996 in United Peoples Party of Assam (UPPA) government. Mr. Mazumder made his debut in politics in 1970s, represented LA-6 Hailakandi four times as Member of Legislative Assembly (MLA), from 1983 – 1991, 1996-2001 and 2011-2016.
Mr Mazumder was born in Hailakandi town on 20 August 1932. After completing his schoolings from Govt. Victoria Memorial High School at Hailakandi, he obtained his B.Sc (Hons.) degree from Cotton College, Guwahati and then pursued M.A. and LLB from Aligarh Muslim University.
He served as Minister for Law, Power and Municipal Administration Departments from 1983-1985 under chief minister Hiteswar Saikia, and again became a Cabinet Minister of Assam in 1996 in the AGP-led coalition Ministry headed by Prafulla Kumar Mahanta looking after Irrigation Department till 2001. Mr. Mazumder had drafted the (in)famous Illegal Migrants (Detention by Tribunal) Act 1983, he had also been the part of drafting committee of Assam Accord (1985). Abdul Muhaib Mazumder penned down his autobiographical memoirs “Down the Memory”in four parts.
Assam CM Dr. Himanta Bishwa Sharma expressed his grief at the demise of former minister Abdul Muhib Mazumder. He tweeted, “We are saddened by the loss of former Minister and Lawyer Abdul Muhib Majumdar. The contribution made by him in his long association with the society and politics of Assam will be remembered for his contribution. We extend our heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family and wish them well.”
TMC Rajyasabha MP Sushmita Dev tweeted, “Sorry to hear about the passing away of Abdul Muhib Majumdar renowned lawyer & Former Minister of Assam. My deepest condolences.”
