Four Copper Headed Trinket Snakes Rescued From Hardware Store In Itkhola

Four copper-headed trinket snakes, locally known as Dudhraj, were rescued from a hardware store near Mediland Hospital in Itkhola on Monday. The snakes, each nearly six feet long, included one female—among the longest—and three males.

Wildlife conservationist and snake rescuer Trikal Chakrabarty led the rescue operation, along with his team members from the Barak Valley Wildlife Division, Subhash Roy, and Manashjyoti Pegu. Following the rescue, the snakes were released together deep inside a reserve forest, their natural habitat.

Speaking to Barak Bulletin, Chakrabarty said, “These snakes are non-venomous but can bite if they feel threatened. That is why we should ensure that we don’t disturb them”.

If bitten, one should not panic but immediately visit the nearest hospital. While the venom is not deadly, fear and hysteria often cause more harm.

Chakrabarty also took the opportunity to spread awareness among locals, urging them to ensure that no wildlife is harmed. He emphasised that raising awareness is of utmost importance—a responsibility that the Barak Valley Wildlife Division has taken seriously.

Due to the vanishing green cover in urban areas with dense populations, spotting snakes has become a common phenomenon over the years.
