Fresh landslides in Silchar - Guwahati road disrupts vehicular traffic; Barak Valley landlocked again
Fresh mudslides have been reported from the part of National Highway 6 between Sonapur and Ratacherra, and the vehicular movements are off again on the road. The concerned area experienced heavy and prolonged rainfall again on May 16th and 17th. On May 16th, the roads were cleared for vehicle movements, but again fresh landslides took place at different places along the road.
The East Jaintia Police Department has informed the same; they also informed that efforts are on to make the road suitable for vehicular movements.
“There has been a fresh landslide in Kuliang village on NH06 this morning. The route from Silchar-Ratachera-Khliehriat has been blocked. Efforts are on to clear the same, and necessary assistance is being provided to stranded passengers,” East Jaintia Hills Police has informed on Twitter today.
GP Singh, the Special Director General of Police Law and Order of Assam, has also appeared on Twitter and appealed to avoid traveling between Silchar and Shillong/Guwahati via road. “Please avoid traveling from Silchar towards Guwahati till the road is cleared,” ADGP Singh tweeted; he also directed East Jaintia Police to inform people about recent developments.
The Night Super Buses between Guwahati and Silchar could not reach their destination as hundreds of vehicles are still stranded on NH06 near Kalain, as per the latest reports.
“Vehicle could move for seven to eight hours after clearing the road yesterday near Ratacherra, but heavy rainfall since yesterday night has again caused landslides, roads are blocked again, Authority is clearing the debris and mud, will take some time to clear the roads. Constant downpouring makes the works harder,” District administration of East Jaintia Hills informed Bara Bulletin.
Parts of Southern Assam, along with Tripura, Mizoram, and Manipur, are still disconnected from the rest of the country through surface communications, while airfare is skyrocketing.
