In 1999, the Kargil War was a focal point of news across India. The Indian Army fought valiantly to reclaim its territory from infiltrators in the high-altitude regions of Kargil. This conflict resulted in the loss of many brave soldiers who laid down their lives to protect the nation. The Kargil War saw over 500 Indian soldiers making the ultimate sacrifice. Among these martyrs were well-known names such as Captain Vikram Batra, Lieutenant Manoj Kumar Pandey, and Rifleman Sanjay Kumar. From Barak Valley, notable martyrs include Lance Naik Nandachand Singh from Lakhipur and Grenadier Chinmoy Bhowmik from Borkhola. Today, we honour and remember the sacrifice of Grenadier Chinmoy Bhowmik, who not only gave his life for his country but also killed two militants before his death.
Grenadier Chinmoy Bhowmik hailed from Jarailtola, a village approximately 20 km from the heart of Silchar, under Borkhola Constituency. He was known for his reserved nature and unwavering sense of duty. Chinmoy joined the Border Security Force in 1985 and served with distinction for nearly 14 years before his heroic death on the night of 15 June 1999 during the Kargil War. His journey from a quiet village to the battlefields of Kargil is a testament to his dedication and patriotism.
Chinmoy’s elder brother, Santosh Kumar Bhowmik, who is currently bedridden, shared memories of Chinmoy’s early life and military career with Barak Bulletin. Santosh vividly described Chinmoy’s reserved personality and his journey to becoming a soldier. Despite his quiet demeanor, Chinmoy was a man of strong principles who always stood for the right reasons and what he believed in.
As a child, Martyr Chinmoy Bhowmik was known for his reserved nature, speaking very little but always willing to help when needed. He had a strong sense of justice and would often become angry over matters of principle. His family, particularly his elder brother Santosh, was concerned about his future. Despite these concerns, Chinmoy’s path took a decisive turn when he decided to join the BSF.
In his youth, Chinmoy faced numerous challenges. His family made significant sacrifices to ensure his future, supporting his aspirations despite the hardships. His transition into the army marked a turning point in his life, where his dedication and sincerity quickly became evident. During his training, Chinmoy’s exceptional performance caught the attention of his superiors, setting the stage for his future career.
During his service, Chinmoy was known for his relentless work ethic and commitment to duty. He never shirked his responsibilities and rarely took leave, dedicating himself fully to his role as a soldier. His superiors and peers respected him for his dependability and unwavering dedication. He was the kind of soldier who would carry out his duties without question, no matter the time of day or night.
On the fateful night of 15 June 1999, Chinmoy was killed in action during an ambush, but not before he managed to kill two enemy militants. His elder brother, Santosh Kumar Bhowmik, was also in Kashmir at the time, serving as an Inspector Pharmacist for the BSF. Santosh had planned to visit Chinmoy but had to return upon learning that his brother was on a mission. The news of Chinmoy’s death came as a devastating blow to the family.
Before his death, Chinmoy had expressed his willingness to get married, and his family had begun making arrangements for his wedding. Sadly, he never returned home for the occasion. His elder brother, Santosh Kumar Bhowmik received the news of Chinmoy’s death from his superiors. Despite his disbelief, he insisted on seeing his brother and visiting the location where the other injured soldiers were. However, after making his demands, overcome with grief, Santosh soon fainted.
The following day, Mr. Bhowmik saw his brother and learned that he was Chinmoy’s next of kin. He received Chinmoy’s body and arranged for his return to their village. Chinmoy was honoured with a full gun salute and the grand gestures befitting a soldier who gave his life for the country.
At Delhi Airport, the flight carrying Chinmoy’s body was delayed. Mr. Bhowmik discovered that the delay was due to the army’s efforts to give Chinmoy a proper gun salute. After the salute, the flight proceeded to Silchar, where Chinmoy was finally laid to rest.
Chinmoy’s elder brother Santosh Kumar Bhowmik shared more about his personality and habits. Despite being reserved, Chinmoy was very fond of Hilsa fish and would always bring some home during his leaves to share a meal with his brothers. Initially reluctant to join the army, Chinmoy’s determination and dedication during his training period earned him the respect and admiration of his superiors. His seriousness towards his duties was such that he rarely took leaves and was always ready to serve, regardless of the time or circumstances.
Santosh Kumar Bhowmik, who was in Kashmir during the Kargil War, had a unique and heart-wrenching experience. On the night of Chinmoy’s death, Santosh was in the same region but had to return without meeting his brother. The family was discussing Chinmoy’s marriage, and he had expressed his desire to settle down. Tragically, he never got the chance to fulfil this wish as his next vacation never came to be.
