"Gandhi Bag amusement park project is the biggest scam in Silchar Municipality's history": Congress

Cachar Congress continues its agitation against the Gandhi Bag Amusement Park project. Urban Development Minister of Assam, Pijush Hazarika recently laid the foundation stone of that project. Today, under the leadership of All India Mahila Congress President and former Silchar MP, Sushmita Dev, Cachar Congress held a press conference.

The Congress leaders echoed that the project is one of the biggest scams in the history of Silchar Municipality Board. They said that as per their estimate the scam would be in the range of Rs 5 to 6 crore. “It could go even higher,” said a Congress spokesperson. They also added that BJP governed Silchar Municipality Board is importing western culture in Gandhi Bag which could destroy the cultural essence of Barak Valley.

Sushmita Dev took a jibe at Silchar MP Rajdeep Roy and said, “I got to know that Rajdeep Roy delivered a high decibel keynote on the laying of foundation stone ceremony. I want to tell him that he is new in electoral politics and has just become an MP. Once he gets to know about the real scams going on in the Municipality board he would regret his actions.”

She also said that the BJP is behaving arrogantly without paying attention to the concerns of the general public. “Amidst massive protests from the public of the city, minister Hazarika came and laid the foundation stone. Initially, it was said that they will listen to the citizens before finalising any project. But the ground reality is they do not care about local sentiments,” Dev added.

The district Congress spokespeople also took a jibe at Niharendra Narayan Thakur and said that he along with a couple of other ward commissioners are running a monopoly in the board and doing whatever they intend to do. They said that the absence of Parimal Shuklabaidya the only minister from Barak Valley in the government of Assam showed how much BJP leaders accept and approve the project. “Not only the minister, Silchar MLA, Dilip Paul, DC, Laya Madduri were also absent,” pointed a spokesperson.

With the Municipality election approaching fast, it looks like the Gandhi Bag is certain to be an election issue. Congress is leaving no stone unturned to question BJP on the project.
