Ganja, Heroin found packaged in a courier office in Rangirkhari; "Parcel was Mizoram-bound," Police

In pursuit of the anti-drugs campaign of the Assam Government, the state police have successfully overseen several raids, both small and big, throughout the state.

In Silchar yesterday, in a courier office adjacent to the Rangirkhari police station, illicit drugs were recovered from a parcel left by an unknown person. The incident happened in a courier office situated in Sonai road of Silchar, adjacent to the Rangirkhari police outpost.

According to the owner of the courier office Shibendu Roy, a person came here with the parcel and dropped it in his shop asking it to be kept here until somebody designated comes along and takes away the package to its desired destination. But after a while, the Rangirkhari Police appeared in his shop rather, and when searched discovered cannabis (ganja) and some heroin drugs packed inside the parcel.

“I had just opened my office when a person came with this parcel telling me that this parcel is meant for a certain Altaf in Mizoram and kept it in my office near other parcels. I thought it would usual parcel delivery as Altaf often transports parcels and other things through my courier service, so I didn’t suspect anything otherwise. A brief while later, the police appeared at my doorstep asking to open up this particular parcel, after which they discovered the carton full of ganja and heroin stashed inside. I then immediately called up Altaf explaining everything to him but still, we couldn’t find out the identity of the sender of the parcel”, said Shibendu Roy, owner of the courier office.

According to Rangirkhari Police station OC, Samarjyoti Das, based on a tip-off, they came to know about the transportation of illicit drugs through this courier office.

He further said, “When we opened up that parcel, we recovered almost a kilogram of ganja, 980 gram, and some heroin stashed inside the carton box. The parcel had ‘ALTAF’ written on the face of it, who is probably responsible for receiving this package, and it was bound for an address in Mizoram where reportedly this person resides and has a small business there. We’re trying to track down the sender of the parcel and the investigation is still underway.”
