GC College issues new notice rectifying error, it states, "Read Bengali typing instead of Assamese typing"

Yesterday, two students of Silchar and members of Barak Democratic Front met the Principal of GC College. They came to meet him because the notification published by the College for recruitment to the posts of Library Assistant and Junior Assistant had mentioned knowledge of Assamese as mandatory for typing in MS Word and Excel. Their issue was that the notification violated the Assam Language Act of 1960 which mandated Bengali to be used for all official purposes in Barak Valley. The Principal met them and admitted that a technical mistake was made while publishing the notification. He assured that a fresh advertisement would be issued and published in the local newspaper which would require knowledge of Bengali as mandatory.

Today, the corrected notification was published by the college via a corrigendum stating “Please read Bengali typing in place of Assamese typing” signed by the Principal urging local newspapers to publish it.

One of the students, Subhasish Choudhury, who crusaded for the inclusion of Bengali language in the recruitment notification, in his recent facebook post wrote, “Gurucharan College administration has rectified the earlier notified recruitment notification, the issue for which we met the Principal yesterday.

In line with the Assam Official Language Amendment Act (1961), the ‘Bengali Language’ typing skill has been introduced as a requirement for the recruitment.

Thanks to every media house and civil society people for helping to build up the required awareness to identify and rectify the fault.”
