Governor of Assam declares April 18 as a public holiday
The two Lok Sabha constituencies of Barak Valley – Silchar and Karimganj will undergo polling on April 18, 2019. The governor of Assam today declared that April 18, 2019 will be a public holiday, which means all the government and non-government offices, educational institutions and business establishments including banks, tea gardens and industries etc. within the jurisdiction of Cachar, Darrang, Dima Hasao, Hailakandi, Hojai, Kamrup, Karbi Anglong, Karimganj, Morigaon, Nagaon, Nalbari, Udalguri, West Karbi Anglong will remain close on account of this public holiday under NI Act 1881.
The notice stated, “In the interest of public services, the governor of Assam is pleased to declare 18th April, 2019 (Thursday) as public holiday under section 25 of NI Act, 1881.(XXIV of 1881) read with the government of India, Ministry of Home Affairs notification number 20/25/PUB-I dated 8th June 1957 in the districts of Cachar, Darrang, Dima Hasao, Hailakandi, Hojai, Kamrup, Karbi Anglong, Karimganj, Morigaon, Nagaon, Nalbari, Udalguri, West Karbi Anglong, on account of the second phase of the general elections to the Lok Sabha 2019.”
The Election Commission of India had already announced that the Lok Sabha polls will be conducted in seven phases. The polling will start on April 11 and continue till May 17, 2019. The results will be declared on May 23. 2019, deciding who forms the 17th Lok Sabha.
In Assam the polls will take place in three phases on April 11, April 18 and April 23 respectively. On April 11, polls will be conducted on five constituencies, on April 18 more five constituencies will undergo polling. Voter of the remaining four constituencies will cast their votes in the final phase of polling on April 23, 2019. Both Silchar and Karimganj constituencies will undergo polling on Aprill 18.
