Greenfield Airport in Silchar: Centre waiting for State government to share land details
Silchar may soon get a new greenfield airport, as the Airport Authority of India has received a proposal to develop a new greenfield airport in Silchar. Replying to a question asked by Guwahati MP Queen Oja, Union Minister of Civil Aviation, Hardeep Singh Puri, on Thursday said the ministry has granted ‘In Principle’ approval for setting up a new greenfield airport at Hollongi, Itanagar in Arunachal Pradesh whereas for Silchar Airport, AAI has requested the state government to share the land details for conducting ‘pre-feasibility study’.
The ministry also added that AAI has initiated action for constructing a new terminal building at Guwahati & Imphal airport, recarpeting of the runway at Lilabari Airport, an extension of the runway at Dibrugarh & Barapani airport, construction of hanger and cargo building at Agartala and the development works at Rupsi and Tezu airports.
It can be mentioned here that Silchar is the second busiest airport in Assam after Guwahati, but the current terminal building is not so spacious as it was required to be, to cater the needs of the passengers. People have to wait here long just to enter the security check-in. However, the construction of the new airport will address the aspiring needs of the valley.
