Hailakandi Police Arrest Social Media Creator for Reels Justifying Bangladesh Lynching Horror
The Hailakandi police have arrested a 19-year-old social media creator on Tuesday (December 23) for allegedly posting controversial videos on social media related to a recent incident in Bangladesh that triggered protests across India, including the Barak Valley.
The arrested youth has been identified as Izazur Rahman Laskar, son of Mozaid Ali Laskar of Gamoria village under Ramkrishna Nagar Police Station of Sribhumi district. He was taken into custody by Hailakandi Sadar Police based on case No. 186/2025, under sections 196(1), 197(1), 299, 353(2), 3(5) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
According to the police, Laskar had uploaded videos commenting on the killing of Dipu Chandra Das, a Hindu youth in Bangladesh. In his videos, he criticised attacks on Indian Muslims following protests against the Bangladesh incident. However, he also allegedly justified the mob lynching and burning of Dipu Das in Bangladesh, claiming it was done as punishment for alleged blasphemy against Prophet Muhammad.
In one of the videos, the accused is heard saying that people should protest against Bangladesh for the incident instead of targeting Indian Muslims. At the same time, he made statements suggesting that the killing was meant to deter others from committing similar acts. He also drew comparisons between religious sentiments, stating that just as Hindus would not tolerate insults against Lord Ram, Muslims could give their lives and even take someone’s life for their Prophet. He further questioned whether Hindus would remain silent if someone insulted Lord Ram.
The videos sparked outrage and concern, as the content of his discussion could disturb communal harmony. Following his arrest, the police seized Laskar’s mobile phone and produced him before the court after initial questioning. Further investigation is underway.
The controversy stems from the killing of Dipu Chandra Das in Bangladesh, who was brutally assaulted by a mob in a public place and later set on fire. The incident led to widespread anger and protests in several parts of India, including Assam. However, it is important to note that no evidence has been found so far to prove that Dipu Chandra Das had committed any act of blasphemy or insulted any religious figure.
Given the religious and political sensitivities surrounding the incident, the timing of such content has also raised concerns. In an already tense atmosphere, unchecked or emotional posts on social media can quickly escalate tensions, spread misunderstanding and disturb communal harmony. Responsible online behaviour is crucial during sensitive moments to prevent further unrest.
