Hailakandi Police intercepts four trucks carrying 832 sacks of Burmese betel nuts from Balicherra

Four trucks carrying 832 sacks of Burmese betel nuts were seized during an operation conducted by Hailakandi Police yesterday night. The four trucks were intercepted by the Police from Balicherra area on the Assam-Mizoram border by a team led by Bilaipur Police Station officer-in-charge Chengleng Singh based on a tip off. The 832 sacks of Burmese betel nuts were loaded in secret chambers of the trucks and were being smuggled from Mizoram through Barak Valley to other neighboring states.

Though the four trucks loaded with Burmese betel nuts were seized by Bilaipur police but no driver or handyman has been arrested yet.

Speaking to reporters, Hailakandi Additional Superintendent of Police Bidyut Das Boro told that the investigation is currently going on against the truck driver and the owner of the Burmese betel nuts. The estimated market value of the seized betel nuts is around 1 crore 80 lakhs as per an estimate by the Hailakandi Police.
