Two thieves arrested from Nutanbazar; 42 ATM cards, Rs. 16,000 cash seized

Police arrested two suspected thieves Mithun Mazumdar (25) and Sanjib Paswan (25) from Nutanbazar in Cachar district on Wednesday evening.

Sources said police saw the duo inside an ATM counter at Nutanbazar and their body language seemed “quite suspicious”. On interrogating and searching them, four ATM cards were found from them. Later, they were apprehended. Mithun hails from Joypur in Lakhipur, while Sanjib is a resident of Gaya in Bihar.

Altogether, 42 ATM cards (of State Bank of India, Bank of India, ICICI Bank, UCO Bank, Corporation Bank, Allahabad Bank, Yes Bank and Union Bank) one laptop, pendrive, disc, some equipments and around Rs. 16,000 in cash were found from them after interrogation. Two registers, which contained different bank account numbers and pin codes, were also recovered by the police.

Sanjib denied his involvement in the matter. He said he worked with some film production units in Mumbai and had come to Mithun’s house after eloping and getting married with a girl. He shared that Mithun, who worked in a bar at Malad in Mumbai, learnt the techniques of stealing money from a customer, who came regularly to the bar where Mithun worked.

Speaking to Barak Bulletin on Thursday evening, Cachar superintendent of police Rakesh Roushan confirmed the arrest and said the matter would be investigated thoroughly to find the accomplices of the arrested persons.

About the modus operandi of theft by the youths, Roushan suspected that the duo somehow lured people at ATM counters and obtained their card numbers through the equipments (seized by the police). Later, clones of the cards were made and money was taken out from them, he suspected.
